We Don’t Want to Work Harder

“Slavery created conditions in the South not unlike those for the Irish in Ireland. A crucial fact for both groups is that labor did not produce value for the worker, and so hard work was not initially a cultural value for either group. The work of the slave resulted in gain only for the slave owner…”

“The minimum wage in 2009 is only 73% of what it was in 1968 in real dollars.”

from Intelligence and How to Get It, Richard E. Nisbett

Hmmmm

Might this explain the modern college graduate, disillusioned by their parents’ generation’s “hard work” not paying off for the family?

And employers wonder why things other than pay are important to this generation (time freedom, for example). We want to work smarter, not harder. We’ve been shown that our hard work generates income for employers, not for us.

Not unlike the work of slaves…

Educate Others

It’s not enough to be well-educated anymore. We have a responsibility to make sure those around us are not ignorant.

Why?

Because internet content and media “coverage” is now being delivered to us on a “pull” basis. Whatever the majority demands is what we all get exposed to.

We have to raise our lowest common denominator to get higher quality information delivered to us.

This is why experiments like www.coursera.org are so important. Free higher education for the masses can only help us now in escaping the whirlpools of ignorance and its capsizing currents of unnecessary drama. Imagine what humankind could experience…

Freedom, emotion, and statistics :-)

Fascinating discussion being had today as part of my Intro to Sociology course taught by a Princeton professor (www.coursera.org). It’s bringing up some concepts I’ve been meditating on recently, namely freedom, complicated environments, and probabilities.

Pavel, a student from Siberia noted the Stalin quote: “The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.” Pavel asked, “Why doesn’t our government, when communicating with its people, tell the story of one woman and her tragedies, rather than quoting statistics?”

I thought, Barack Obama did this very well. He understands that most people lead simple lives and are more touched emotionally by drama than by statistics! This is also what CNN understands and the rest of the media, entertainment businesses, cable TV, advertising, etc.  DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA!! People are very comfortable/familiar with drama. This is also where Kerry went wrong. Once you become very educated, you can lose touch with the emotional side and the drama of life. I feel I have the best of both worlds. I feel very educated, but it leads me to a place of reverence, poetry and beauty, as if I get to attend a private studio session with God and watch him work on a great work of art. That to me is sociology. Those less emotionally inclined (or I might argue, emotionally repressed) would say that information would lead you to a place of dry statistics.

The essay we read said that people feel trapped by their circumstances until they develop a sociological imagination. Until we can have an understanding of the environment which brought about our circumstances, we can feel that we are victimized, or have fewer options.

The flip side of entrapment, of course, would be freedom, and empowerment.

It was nice to see the entire spectrum covered. It seems, the less you know, the more drama you experience in your life, the more fearful you will be of the unknown forces that are rocking your little boat on the big ocean. However, on the other end of the spectrum, when you fully understand all the reasons for interplay in your environment, you can become an unbiased observer, free from the confusion of emotional entanglements (but I would argue that emotions are another source of information to be understood).

The professor noted that it is necessary to learn more about your environment so that you can decipher truth from illusion. Some of the other students later brought up the question of how much of society is illusion and how much is truth. So if we agree that illusions are mostly conceived in fear, traps, and ignorance, then truth can be found in the domain of  courage, freedom, and education.

That’s about all I have energy for today :-)

Life Lessons

Lessons becoming very clear today:

1. Never be too proud to work a job “beneath” your level of education. Supervisor at valet job commented he was doing payroll this week, I thanked him in advance, and he said, “Thank YOU, for working. Because you are willing to work, I get paid to supervise and do payroll.”

I thought that was pretty cool.

2. We intuitively know what others need, we have to create the peaceful, quiet, receptive environment in which desires can surface and be met with completion. This is a natural process which takes time, time that is normally rushed in a work week full of tasks and activities. There is a certain pace which is more conducive to individuals coming together to get their needs met. This rhythm is most easily found when immersing oneself in nature, i.e., tuning out of routine noises and tasks and tuning into the rhythms of the breezes, birds chirping, water falling, etc.

3. You can choose the interpretation of your experience of life as either a victim of your environment, or a master of your environment. The truth is somewhere along the spectrum. But if you act as though you are the master of your environment, you make it more so. This is because you take responsibility for any outcomes you see around you and work to change everything within your power to suit your vision of happiness. Conversely, one who blames and criticizes his/her environment gives power to the environment and makes the victim more impotent.

Live powerfully!

Cleaning out my attic

Time for a contemplative post. I tend to get thoughtful when I’m sick, in this case a throat irritation, probably from breathing in dust/animal waste cleaning out the attic the past 2 days.

On my mind these days are relationships, romantic ones. I’m more and more beginning to identify with polyamory, which to me means that love isn’t necessarily something that needs to be shared/deepened with just one person in your life. I’m finding I have the capacity to love more than one man/woman romantically and doing so is quite satisfying, delightful, and enlightening.

Developing relationships in parallel gives me the opportunity to stay fresh (I can tend to lock into routine/staleness as a default with someone who is always accessible) and work on being the kind of lover and friend I want to be from different angles. It’s wonderful to feel free to meet whomever delights you and see where that relationship may take you. I find that the best-fitting relationships take me closer to myself and my already-good relationships, and the not-so-good ones tend to just fizzle.

I’m still working on issues like judging others for whom they’re seeing and why, or twinges of jealousy, but with self-examination I’m getting glimpses of my hypocrases and slowly becoming more cool and comfortable just going with the flow.

I think that in the past I have not been very discriminatory about who I dated, in the sense that I wasn’t strong enough in my own sense of my needs that I was willing to ask and receive what I wanted/needed out of relationships. I feel I’m getting more authentic in expressing what I’m feeling and not trying to be so passive/observant (another default).

We’re So Far Past Pro-Life

Even pro-lifers use birth control
Every time an egg and a sperm get away
Without meeting in a warm, cozy uterus
Or a warm, cozy petri dish
An angel loses its wings

Why not collect and freeze every cute little wiggling tail?
None down the hatch, now!
One day we may need to populate another planet
Give their Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel
People to go visit

Enough talk about what to do with my stomach’s contents
If you need them so badly, execute me and harvest away!
Or better yet, build an American town, every day, forever
For the 3,700 tiny people you could retrieve and rescue

Not your best plan.
So try setting down your hammer,
And your condemning signs,
And sing a song reminding yourself,
That your own life is worth living.

Going Somewhere

It all came together, finally, tonight. Another crisis hit me this weekend, the “What the f— am I doing with my life?” feeling I get every so often, which seems to coincide suspiciously with occurrences of my bank accounts bottoming out.

What occurred to me was that I wasn’t really advancing any causes that are important to me. Since the day I sold my soul to the devil, sometime in June 1999, I hadn’t given a second thought to what might be important to me in life. Even when I quit my engineering job, I made it no further than “What slightly interests me?”

Shazaam! I had been asking myself the wrong question the past five years!

What I *should* have asked myself was: “What is wrong with my world now and how will I affect change/influence it so it matches my vision?”

That question begs a list. And a list gives direction. I would then have to ask myself: What education will I need? What resources and connections will I need to bring such changes about? What skills should I acquire? Who else shares my vision(s)?

This is going to be fun. My guess is this list is going to be somewhat fluid and things could flip-flop, but here’s where I stand as of today.

First Stab at List:
Healthcare
-Educate people about preventative health
-Reduce reliance on pharmaceuticals
-Make sure every working person and student is properly insured for health emergencies and automatically covered for preventative care
-End farm subsidies which promote junk food products and unhealthy fillers/sweetners
-Distinguish between “food” and food products in FDA guidelines/policy

Politics
-Make sure shitheads don’t get elected to represent me
-Reduce power of corporations to influence government
-Increase minimum wage to a living wage
-Promote single-earner family/community structures with social policy, increase (good) parent-to-child ratio
-Promote community-building and children-friendly spaces
-Increase quality of cooperation and understanding among other cultures

Education
-Practice democracy in school systems in function and design
-Focus on personal development, communication, relationship management as critical development skills for youth
-Assess “grades” such that students better understand what skills they have and what they lack
-Make education affordable/accessible for everyone
-Increase extracurricular involvement opportunities for youth

Environment
-eliminate use of pesticides and herbicides
-eliminate use of hormones in animals and humans for food production and birth control
-eliminate large-scale ecosytem disruptions caused by mega-farms (acres of similar farmland, orchards, trucking 75% of country’s bees into one state for 2 weeks); make communities more self-sufficient/local-emphasis, diversify locally
-Advance clean energy
-Minimize wasteful chemical emissions to air/water (power, transportation)

Poverty
-Make dignified housing accessible for anyone of any income

Prisons
-Rehabilitate criminals instead of caging them
-Legalize and monitor drugs

Fun Stuff
-Permanent, easy hair removal
-healthy cigarettes
-eliminate overhead power/phone lines
-design a community and/or pleasing home environment
-design own clothing/jewelry
-eliminate boring, standard, ticky-tacky houses, cars, buildings

Well, that’s a start. Off to bed now and maybe I’ll revise, prioritize and beef up the list so I can get some more direction in my life’s actions.

Changes (poem):
Stomach turning
Turning to face reality once again
How a paycheck can make you feel so far from your dreams
So here I am again
Spinning in the mud
Unimpressed with myself
At the end of the day, what was there to show for your efforts?
I’m so used to rewards
Am I just addicted?

Interesting George Carlin Quote

Found this in the comments section of a Deadmau5 post:

“People are wonderful one at a time. Each of them has an entire hologram of the universe somewhere within them.
But as soon as individuals begin to clump, as soon as they begin to clot, they change…”
“…The ideal group for human beings is one. With the occasional sexual visit to the land in the next group. Temporary twosomes are fine…”
“…The larger the group, the more toxic, the more of your beauty as an individual you have to surrender for the sake of group thought. And when you suspend your individual beauty you also give up a lot of your humanity. You will do things in the name of a group that you would never do on your own. Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you’ve lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that’s bigger than you are and that controls you.”

F— the world, Lil’ Wayne, and 5-Hour Energy

It took a dose of 5-Hour Energy drink (caffeinated, couldn’t find decaf in 4 stores on entire campus) for me to understand what Lil’ Wayne was talking about: “Fuck the world, and get a child out her.”

Well, I’m sure he meant something a little different, but it started to make sense to me like this: There’s a human tendency to take the path of least resistance, go with the flow, don’t rock the boat, keep on keeping on, etc., that is obviously prevalent in every day life (and ripe with cliches). We see this in government, we see this in some of our parents, we see this in the older generation doing things the way they’ve always been done, resisting change, resisting improvement.

Fucking requires a level of energy beyond that.

School is a place of hope. Universities are a place of “I want to move to another level.” Education necessarily requires us to put energy in in order to get something out. Not unlike the passionate act of, shall we say, making love, and creating a child.

But how many people do you see “fucking the world”? Seems like most are still trying to survive it, like it’s some kind of abusive relationship or something.

To get something that no one else around you has, you have to be willing to do something that no one else around you will do.

If you just pictured smuggling 50 kilos of cocaine across the border in a private plane, try again ;-)

Try something passionate, full of love, something scary, something no one else around you dares to do, that will push you to the next level. Then get ready for the next level of awesome.

Thanks Lil’ Wayne…and 5-Hour Energy

Soulmate Test

This kinda seemed like good advice:

“Well, if you are missing any of the following points, then it’s possible you haven’t found your true soul mate yet, although you might be perfectly happy with the person you are with. (Assuming you are already a couple…)

If you find yourself gazing at the person you have chosen and realize that absolutely nothing about their physical appearance jars in any way, their ears aren’t too small, that hint of a bald spot doesn’t send you screaming in the other direction, the way they walk doesn’t make you feel like a zoo-keeper, or their profile, showing a beautiful roman nose sitting prominently over a rapidly receding chin doesn’t inspire you to buy a gift certificate for a plastic surgeon, then you might possibly be looking at your soul mate.

When you realize this person inspires you to improve yourself, encourages you to reach for goals you previously thought beyond your capabilities, fosters a sense of self worth, or helps you to overcome obstacles so you can fulfil your expectations and not theirs, then you might be looking at your soul mate.

When you find comfort in their presence, not their absence, are treated with the respect that each one of us rightly deserves, have the freedom and safety to do your own thing without reprisal, and if they accept your gestures or overtures of affection with love and warmth instead of impatience or disdain, then you might be looking at your soul mate.”
